The Royal Family’s 3 Favourite Holiday Homes

1. Balmoral Castle

The Balmoral Estate is one of the royal family’s most revered possessions. The land was originally bought up by Queen Victoria in 1852, when she demolished the old buildings to make way for a new, larger castle.
It’s a fascinating site to visit, and if you stay at one of the numerous Ballater hotels, you’ll be no more than ten minutes away. Visitors are able to view inside the majestic ballroom between the months of April and July, or roam through the magnificent 49,000-acre estate – which ranges from scenic river valleys, to mountains and moors.

2. Sandringham House

Situated in the county of Norfolk, the area around Sandringham House has been official recognised as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. The house boasts a 20,000-acre estate, which is divided between farmland, parkland and gardens. The estate has been in the possession of the British Royal Family since Tudor times, and has long offered a popular country retreat for reigning monarchs. The current house was built in 1870, at the command of Edward VII – who had the former Sandringham Hall razed to the ground, as he found it just wasn’t big enough for his needs.

3. Holyrood Palace

Holyrood Palace, or to give the property its formal title, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, is a beautiful royal palace located close to Edinburgh’s Old Town district. You can reach it on foot from any Edinburgh city centre hotel, and the palace occupies a wonderful location in the city – close to the Royal Mile, as well as the popular Princes Street. Princes Street is one of Edinburgh’s chief shopping districts, as well as boasting a number of fascinating museums and galleries. You’ll be able to tie them all in to one day trip, along with a visit to the magnificent Edinburgh Castle, which overlooks Holyrood Palace from its dramatic perch on Castle Mount.
